Natrona, Johnson counties move to bigger sites

CASPER - The Wyoming Democratic Party today further updated information on the March 8 county caucuses, in which any Wyoming voter who is registered in their county as a Democrat as of Friday, Feb. 22, is invited to help choose the party's presidential nominee.

Party officials in Natrona and Johnson counties have moved their caucuses/conventions to larger sites this week.

The Natrona County Democratic caucus/convention will now take place at the Holiday Inn on the River, at 300 West "F" St. in Casper, according to John Faunce, chairman of the Natrona County Democratic Party.

"There has been an unprecedented interest in this convention," Faunce said. "We would rather be overprepared than underprepared."

He noted that the campaigns of both Democratic presidential front-runners Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have opened offices in Casper, indicating the high level of interest both candidates have demonstrated in wooing Wyoming voters.

Registration for the Natrona County caucus/convention will begin at 7:30 a.m. March 8, and the event will officially begin at 9:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, Democrats in Johnson County have moved their county caucus/convention to the Buffalo Senior Center at 671 W. Fetterman St. in Buffalo. The Johnson County event is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. March 8.

"We saw some amazing voter registration figures in the days leading up to the Feb. 22 deadline to register for the caucuses," said Wyoming Democratic Party Communications Director Bill Luckett. "The number of people who have indicated they plan to turn out on March 8 to help choose the Democratic Party's presidential nominee is staggering."

For the first time in recent memory, two major presidential candidates have paid staffers on the ground in Wyoming - in February. Luckett said that fact has energized Democrats across the state and raised a great deal of interest in Wyoming's March 8 presidential preference caucuses.

"This race is extremely close, and at this point, every delegate counts," Luckett said. "We are delighted that the Clinton and Obama campaigns are taking such a serious interest in Wyoming's county caucuses and conventions. This year will provide an historic opportunity for Wyoming Democrats to decide who will win the party's presidential nomination."

As of today, Democrats have secured times and locations for all 23 county caucuses. Those times and locations are as follows (with the number of delegates each county gets to send to the state convention in parentheses):
