Senate applicants list finalized; three finalists to be named Tuesday

Although the procedure to replace the late Craig Thomas in the U.S. Senate is restricted almost entirely to the other party, there is understandably considerable interest across the political spectrum in who that person will be, so I thought I'd note it here in our blog. There are 31 applicants for the position, a field that will be whittled down to three when the Republican state central committee meets at the Ramkota Inn in Casper at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 19. That meeting will be open to the public. There is also a candidate forum scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Krampert Theater at Casper College, and the fourm will be broadcast on Wyoming Public Television. A list of the candidates is on the Wyoming Republican Party's Website, which I will not link to for several reasons. Once the GOP names its three finalists, state law gives Gov. Freudenthal five days to appoint one of them to fill the next 18 months of the Senate term. Then, in 2008, the position will be up for election, so the people can decide who will fill out the remaining four years of the Senate term. Because Sen. Mike Enzi's seat is up for election in 2008, Wyoming is currently the only state scheduled to elect TWO senators next year, which will be exciting. And, as always, there will be a U.S. House race, which is already starting to look interesting. (Click here for a story about Republicans fighting with each other regarding that race. Note especially Barbara Cubin's calm, level-headed approach to the concept that she could have a primary opponent next year ... and try not to laugh when she has the gall to call someone else's "judgment and discretion" into question.) Yes, this is already shaping up to be quite an eventful election cycle.
