“Former State Treasurer Cynthia Lummis won Tuesday's Republican primary for Wyoming's lone seat in the U.S. House. Unofficial results show Lummis defeating Johnson County businessman and rancher Mark Gordon 46 to 38 percent, with 99 percent of precincts reporting…A recent ad by the Gordon campaign depicted Lummis as a little girl digging herself into a hole in a sandbox, implying Lummis would support policies that would worsen the nation's problems. An ad by the Lummis campaign depicted Gordon's head pasted on a cartoonish body and mentioned Gordon's past contributions to Democratic candidates, including John Kerry. Both candidates criticized the opposition for distorting the facts. Campaign finance figures through July 30 showed Gordon had raised $1.25 million, including just over $1 million of his own money. Lummis raised $432,000, of which 85 percent came from individuals and political action committees.”

Lummis Credits Grassroots Effort in Primary Win
“…Lummis will now face Gary Trauner, who ran unopposed in Tuesday's Democratic primary. Turnout was relatively light across the state on Tuesday, with 52 percent of Wyoming's 138,234 registered Republicans stopping off at the polls and only 40 percent of the state's 60,736 Democrats opting to vote in the primary. That low Democratic turnout may have been the reason that the tightest race of the day didn't come in that Republican contest for the nomination to the U.S. House, but in the Democratic Party contest to see who will face John Barrasso in November….”

No State Recounts Required (Secretary of State's Office)
“Secretary of State, Max Maxfield, announced today that given the unofficial election results submitted by county clerks, it appears as if no statutory recounts are required in any statewide or legislative races. “There were certainly some close races, but none that by statute require a recount at this time,” stated Maxfield. According to state statute (W.S. 22-16-109) a recount is required if the number of votes between the winning and losing candidate is less than one percent of the votes cast for the winning candidate….”
Voter Turnout For the Primary (Secretary of State's Office)
“This morning Secretary of State Max Maxfield released some preliminary information regarding voter turnout. “Although all information is unofficial regarding total ballots cast in each county, the summary information indicates that the voter turnout for yesterday’s primary was about 47 percent of those who are registered to vote,” Maxfield said. Over the past 10 years, voter turnout in Wyoming for primary elections has averaged 54 percent. “Voter turnout is generally much higher for the general election, so we’ll likely see a higher turnout this November,” Maxfield said. “Although fewer people tend to vote in the Primary than in the General, Wyoming’s primary turnout is still good compared to other states percentage such as South Dakota which had a 37 percent turnout, Idaho had 25 percent turnout and Montana had a 45 percent turnout,” Maxfield said.”
"Trauner Promotes Independence, Congratulates Lummis" (Trauner for Congress)
“While welcoming his general election opponent to the race for Wyoming's lone U.S. House seat Tuesday night, Gary Trauner said this year's race is about doing what's right for Wyoming, not what Washington party leaders want. "When hard-working moms and dads across Wyoming make good money, but still can't save for their children because of high gas prices and health care costs, America is on the wrong track." Trauner went on to say, "It's time to for leaders who know there aren't Democratic problems or Republican problems, there are Wyoming problems and Wyoming solutions. I congratulate and welcome Cynthia Lummis to this debate, and congratulate Mark Gordon on his hard-fought campaign and desire to bring meaningful change to Wyoming." Trauner finished by noting that he vigorously disagrees with Sen. McCain's proposal to renegotiate Western water rights. "I'll stand up to anyone who doesn't put Wyoming's interests first, and I hope Cynthia uses this opportunity to join me in standing up for Wyoming ranchers and farmers." Trauner Campaign Manager, Adam Ruff, said, "We need a strong voice like Gary Trauner in Congress to do what's right for Wyoming and keep Wyoming water from going to Arizona golf courses." The next two and a half months will see Trauner going door-to-door in even more communities than he did in 2006, when he lost by half a percentage point to Rep. Barbara Cubin. Trauner has a county leadership team in all 23 counties comprised of Democrats, Republicans and Independents. More information on Gary Trauner can be found at http://www.traunerforcongress.com/. His office can be reached at 307-265-4022.”
Obama, New VP Choice to Campaign on Saturday
“Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama will campaign with his new vice presidential pick Saturday at the place where the Illinois senator's campaign began, a report said Wednesday. The Associated Press reported that Obama and his veep choice will appear together in Springfield, Ill., the former state capital where Abraham Lincoln once held office.
The Obama campaign has remained tight lipped about the VP selection and the event on Saturday, saying only that Obama will begin his journey to the party's national convention from there. The convention begins in Denver, Colo. on Monday.”
“Change begins from the ground up. Yes, Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has inspired millions of young people to get involved and vote, but we will never change much unless we start at the grassroots. Locally, we can see the effect of Obama’s empowering movement in the candidacy of two 20-somethings: Claire Fuller and Tommy Wood (and, to some extent, Greg Miles and Matt Lee, two other progressive candidates young in outlook if not in years). Fuller, 24, is running for Teton County commissioner as a Democrat, following in the footsteps of her Huidekoper forbears. Wood, 29, has mounted an aggressive campaign for Jackson Town Council after moving to town just two years ago. Both have appealed to a demographic traditionally underrepresented in Teton County: their peers….”
