What an exciting weekend full of Wyoming political news! We've got debates, we've got polls, we've got endorsements. First off, we had the debates in Casper yesterday among the candidates for governor, U.S. House, and U.S. Senate. Here are the links to the news articles that the Casper Star-Tribune published about the debates:
- Governor debate: Gov. Dave Freudenthal talks about his impressive record of earning bipartisan support for accomplishments that move Wyoming forward, both today and for our future, including the Hathaway Scholarship program, the Business-Ready Communities program, the Wildlife Trust Fund, and school capital construction, to name a few. Meanwhile, his opponent exposes himself as one of the few people across the state who just doesn't get it.
- U.S. House debate: Gary Trauner offers the state a MUCH-NEEDED CHANGE from politics as usual in our congressional representation, while the crowd can't contain its laughter at Barbara Cubin's ridiculous claim that she's not on TV saying negative things about the other side. I mean, how else would someone describe her campaign? With regards to Cubin's various false claims, Trauner points out something to Cubin that her advisers should have told her months ago, which is, "you don't get to just make stuff up because you want to win." Wouldn't it be nice if she heeded that sound advice?
- U.S. Senate debate: Dale Groutage launches some well-aimed attacks at Congress for its irresponsible spend-record-amounts-of-money-you-don't-have budget policy, senseless partisan bickering that prevents finding solutions to our country's problems, and giving our nation's people a "dysfunctional" government. As Dale notes, Wyoming's people "want their government back," and that's what he is fighting to accomplish.
And then there are the polls that the Casper Star-Tribune has published over the past couple days (margin of error is 4 percent):
- Gov. Dave is "heavily favored" in the poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research that the Star-Tribune published Sunday. The poll gives Gov. Dave a 33-point lead less than four weeks from election day, and he has earned broad support from both men and women as well as a majority of both Democrats and Republicans across Wyoming. Of course, the only poll that matters will take place in voting booths on Nov. 7, but as of this point, the Freudenthal campaign, like the state of Wyoming in general (according to 79 percent of the people), appears to be on the right track. Our job is to make sure it stays that way.
- Dale Groutage shows some progress in the Mason-Dixon poll released today. The number of people who said they would vote for Dale today has jumped by more than 50 percent from the last poll the newspaper published in February. Unfortunately, he still has some ground to gain over the next three weeks. Our job is to help him gain that ground and give our nation's government back to its people.
- Coming tomorrow: the U.S. House race. I'll update this posting with that information as soon as it is available. It should also be on the Star-Tribune's Web site, but sometimes it's hard to find specific stories on the site, so I'll make sure to link to it here.
Finally, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reportedly listed several election endorsements on Sunday. I haven't seen the article yet, but I'm working on getting my hands on it, and when I do, I'll get a link to that information.
