This week's big news is the Casper Star-Tribune poll on the Trauner-Cubin race. It shows that Cubin is leading 44-37 percent, with 15 percent still undecided and the other 4 percent planning to vote for the Libertarian candidate. So the score here in the fourth quarter is that we're down by one touchdown with just enough time to catch up and win. It's going to take a lot of work, but we can do it, and we have several reasons to be optimistic.
First of all, everyone knows who Cubin is, but after 12 years in office, only 44 percent of the voters still think she deserves to be sent back to Washington. The fact that she is that far under 50 percent this late in the game, when everyone knows what she is all about, shows us that it is unlikely she will get a majority of the votes on election day.
Meanwhile, half of the people surveyed are still forming their opinions about Gary Trauner. Gary has the resources to get his message to these voters over the next three weeks - which is when people pay the most attention - and when they learn the most about the candidates. This is our opportunity to reach out to these voters and convince them that Gary is the best candidate for the job.
The newspaper article tells us only 13 percent of the undecided voters have an favorable impression of Cubin, while 39 percent have an unfavorable opinion of her. This bodes well for Gary's chances of capturing these votes. Over all, people's opinions of Gary are favorable by about a 2-1 margin (33-18 percent), while Cubin's unfavorable rating is 45 percent, compared with only 43 percent who think of her favorably.
By and large, people across Wyoming know we need a change in Congress. We know Gary is the right person for the job, and we've got until Nov. 7 to convince the rest of the people in the state that this is true. Let's all get out there and work to get Gary elected!
